The Plekans originally hailed from Wisconsin where they were very active in volunteering in youth service groups, animal shelter activities, hospice work with miniature horses, and nursing home visitations with dogs. They have been an active foster home for dogs not medically or socially ready for adoption and are an approved canine and equine adoptive home. Currently they share their lives with two donkeys, one mule, sixteen horses from mini to big, two dogs and seven cats. Several of the horses are adopted including two with special needs due to medical conditions. The Plekans owned and operated a professional photographic and video studio for over eighteen years in Wisconsin. They have participated in many special events and educational workshops where they presented on photography, videography, volunteerism, and responsible pet ownership.
Debi has over ten years experience working in the Social and Human Services field. She has studied the needs of Alzheimers and other dementias and was a Promotional Manager for private Adult Day Care educating local health professionals on care-giver options. Debi is past President, Vice-President, board member, case-worker, and volunteer Big Sister of Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Manitowoc County. Her degree is in Pre-Law with a major in Political Science, minors in History and Psychology. She recently completed certification for animal disaster rescue and is a volunteer with the national Emergency Animal Disaster Rescue Team. She has shared her life with horses of all sizes for over thirty years and is knowledgeable in veterinary practices, equine health and stable management.
David had been a volunteer for several years as a Mentor for at-risk youth in touch with the law for Lakeshore Community Action Program. He also has been a Group Leader during Rodeo Bible Camp. He has been a professional horse trainer for over nine years utilizing resistant-free natural training methods. David's philosophy of training is not how quickly he can ride a horse, but rather how many positive tools he can teach the horse so that horse and rider consistently and willingly work together as a team. He has conducted several Horsemanship and Round Pen Training Techniques Clinics in Wyoming and Wisconsin. He has studied and attended seminars of John Lyons, Richard Shrake and Pat Parrelli, and attended Lakeshore Technical College where he studied Equine Management and Farriery. |
